MEMORANDUM OF SOCIETY CARE FOUNDATION NH ROAD ANANTNAG 192101 J&K

NAME The name of the organization shall be CARE FOUNDATION.

HEADQUARTERS The name of the Society (NGO) is CARE FOUNDATION. The registered Head Office of the Foundation will be at Anantnag. Branches may be decided by the managing body in the future through proper resolution.

Objectives of the Society (Organization)

The aims and objectives for which the society is formed are:

We are dedicated to working for the rehabilitation and empowerment of persons with spinal cord injuries (wheelchair users) in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Our core aim is to identify persons with spinal cord injury (PwSCI) from all parts and corners of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Even though the topography of Jammu and Kashmir is such that many parts are yet to be connected with roads and a good percentage of the population lives a migratory life (coming down in winter and going back to mountain tops in summer to graze their cattle), visiting these places is difficult even for able-bodied individuals. However, from 2010 onwards, concrete steps were taken to identify such persons by involving friends and friends of friends, social media, and phone calls.

As there is no cure for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), our aim is to prevent such people from falling prey to agents and selfish people who aim to make money by taking advantage of their desire to walk again, as nobody, even in the last minutes of life, would prefer a wheelchair life. People from all walks of life are sustaining SCI. On all three fronts - individual, social, and government levels - we have failed to enforce the prevention of SCI by implementing safety measures, despite knowing that prevention is the only cure. A good percentage of PwSCI do not have access to the internet or even mobile phones. Our endeavor is to reach such people through our network and help them avoid the associated problems of spinal cord injury and live a successful and independent life, both physically and financially.

Though we do not have our own rehabilitation center to date, we have a good network with quality rehabilitation centers throughout India and utilize their services as and when required. We have sent many PwSCI to different centers to treat their bedsores and other ailments. All expenses like food, transportation, and medicines were paid for by us, and we are committed to continuing this in the future with even greater intensity.

We are dedicated to helping PwSCI with innovative ideas for modifying their homes with minimal expenses to make them independent in carrying out their daily chores. However, a large number of people from our fraternity are living in hilly areas where such modifications are not feasible. It is our first and foremost aim to construct a multi-purpose, fully accessible REHAB-HOME where PwSCI can live the rest of their lives with purpose, dignity, and independence.

Programs

  • Compilation of a database of persons with spinal cord injury and details about their wheelchair life, home, family, and nearest hospital facility.
  • Generation of livelihood opportunities for PwSCI.
  • Modifications of bedrooms and washrooms of PwSCI to make them independent.
  • Taking them (PwSCI) on outings to various tourist attractions of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh so that they do not become victims of depression and negativity.
  • Providing appropriate wheelchairs, as ill-fitting wheelchairs result in many serious complications and negatively impact the body posture of PwSCI.
  • Providing support to students with SCI pursuing different courses in various parts of J&K and India.
  • Free treatment of bedsores, including medicine and transportation.
  • Providing electric wheelchairs to PwSCI with higher spinal injury levels.
  • To provide instant physical and psychological rehabilitation to new PwSCI, especially students with SCI, so that they do not lose precious time in their education and career development.
  • To provide different mobility, hearing, and orthotic aids to disabled persons, especially PwSCI from far-flung and underprivileged families.
  • To advocate for the implementation of rights for people with disabilities (PWD).
  • To motivate different government agencies, public sector, and private sector units to make their offices wheelchair accessible.
  • To organize a robust movement for the prevention of spinal cord injury.
  • To work for promoting Paralympics in Jammu and Kashmir and searching for young para-athletes so that they can make their names in various para-sports like wheelchair basketball, archery, swimming, car driving, and wheelchair racing.
  • As some parts of Jammu and Kashmir experience severe winters and snow covers the land for more than three months, our aim is to build an indoor wheelchair basketball court and covered area so that PwSCI can continue to play these games in winters as well.
  • To construct a multi-purpose Rehab-home where PwSCI can live the rest of their lives with purpose, dignity, and independence.
  • To work for and with all organizations for peace, arms control, and campaigns that have a mandate to minimize disability and ensure peace.
  • To work for the advocacy and protection of the rights of underprivileged sections, including disabled persons, through RTIs, lawsuits, PILs, and meetings with stakeholders.
  • To hold sensitization programs regarding attitudinal change and organize seminars and awareness camps to educate people about safety measures to prevent accidents resulting in severe disabilities like SCI.
  • To facilitate and mediate marriages and other social programs for persons with severe disabilities like spinal cord injury (wheelchair users), thus educating society about the need for social acceptance of these persons.
  • To undertake projects for the modification of government, public, and private hospitals, offices, parks, gardens, and other installations to make them accessible for PWD and wheelchair-friendly.
  • To undertake projects for building hospitals and medical centers to provide basic medical facilities at the nearest possible locations and improve the working of community health programs.

Lastly, the organization shall be a purely non-political, social organization dedicated to serving persons from the lower strata of society, severely disabled individuals like PwSCI, underprivileged individuals, and senior citizens, irrespective of caste, creed, and religion.
